Yoga nidra is both an exercise in deep relaxation and meditation. Your body relaxes and the teacher guides your awareness inward as you listen to his instructions, similar to a guided meditation. All you have to do is get comfortable in a lying position.
In yoga nidra, consciousness is between sleep and wakefulness. In the state where we may be dreaming but we can still hear the surroundings. It's a perfect situation to learn something new, create new neural pathways and break old habits.
Some people who come to yoga nidra fall asleep the first few times and that is perfectly fine. Sometimes you just need an extra hour to sleep. The goal for those who practice yoga nidra regularly, however, is to train awake with alert attention in this state. From it you can get a deep nourishing rest that is said to be equal to 4 hours of sleep.
